This describes a logarithmic scale with a base of 10. Using that scale, 10x is the power of an earthquake of magnitude x. So if two earthquakes differ by 1/2 point, then 10x+1/2 - 10x = 101/2 =

  3. The sequence is 10^n-1 if 1->1 2->10 3->100 4->1000 etc. Therefore if we substitute 1.5 into the sequence we get 10^0.5 aka √10=3.16 (2dp)
