Take two matchsticks from the left (thus destroying one of the smaller squares) and take two matchsticks from the right in the similar manner. This means four matchsticks will be taken in total. Place them inside the larger square so that it'll become divided into four smaller squares. Thus we get four smaller squares inside the bigger one plus four smaller squares stay intact outside of it plus the bigger square itself -- nine squares in total.
