Upsc Puzzle Question - 12 December

The question that follows came in the UPSC final exam that was held in December 2013. Only one examinee i.e. Gaurav Agarwal was able to solve it. Can you solve it?

? + ? + ? + ? + ? = 30

You have to fill numbers in place of question marks. The numbers that you can use are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15. You can repeat the numbers if you like.

  1. Solved it?? Perhaps you meant to say "proved insolubility" or something like it, cause 5 odd numbers can not give an even sum (30), so the problem has no solution with the given numbers.

    (15 - 9) + (13 - 7) + (7 - 1) + (9 - 1) + (13 - 9)

    If you calculate it, you will get
    6 + 6 + 6 + 8 + 4 = 30

    1. I have seen that answer but i do not know how the answers have brackets and minus in them. IS it because of lack of restrictions based on the explanation or something entirely different?

  3. If that was the "correct" answer ,it is absolutely absurd. Why not then simply 1+1+1+...+1=30 (put brackets at leisure to get 5 terms)
    This is not mathematics. This is stupidity (on behalf of the ones which thought of such a nonsense for a "problem", I mean)

  5. I'm with Vinay Sipani. When I saw this problem, my immediate reaction was that it must be in some other base. I think 3+3+3+3+3=30 (in base 5) is an elegant solution

    The question should have only 3 boxes.

  23. (3!)plus(9)plus(15)=30 Or (6)plus(9)plus(15)=30 here 6 is not used but we use invert 9 to 6......

  26. Enter your comment...In the question it was written that u will have to fill the boxes and it was not written that fill all the boxes.Futhermore there were 3 boxes in the original question and not 5 boxes.The solution to the question Will be (15 +15) =30..

    x + y + z = 30
    x + y + z - 30 = 0
    divide them by two

    x/2 + y/2 + z/2 - 30/2 = 0
    x/2 + y/2 + z/2 - 15 = 0
    x/2 + y/2 + z/2 = 15

    now insert values from from question (given),
    x/2 = 9
    y/2 = 3
    z/2 = 3

    9 + 3 + 3 = 15

    Alternatively,
    x/2 = 11
    y/2 = 3
    z/2 = 1

    11 + 3 + 1 = 15

    Alternatively,
    x/2 = 3
    y/2 = 7
    z/2 = 5

    3 + 7 + 5 = 15

    Overall, The Solution depends on option given below the question.

    15 + (11-9)+13=30
    15+2+13=30
    30=30
    right?
